The Drawing Board is an initiative by Rohan Builders and Mindspace Architects that frames a competition annually for students of architecture to respond to real design challenges in specific locations, encouraging them to engage with questions of context, community, heritage and the built environment. Since its inception in 2016, the initiative has brought together students from architecture schools across India and internationally, creating a sustained platform for experimentation, exchange and learning.

As an extension of the competition, the annual publication authored, designed and published by Matter is a compendium of each edition, bringing together the brief, the process, a record of the winning projects, and the eventual outcomes.

Matter’s work is cumulative across the process, from developing the narrative and authoring the text to designing and producing the final publication. Each edition is conceived as a consistent record , discussions and a document of the wider pedagogical and architectural questions that The Drawing Board engages with through the competition each year.
