Vertical Garden and Adaptive Reuse of an Old Sea-facing Structure
The redevelopment and renovation of the Marina Villa’s riverfront facing façade was taken up after it suffered heavy damage from a cyclone in 2021. A simple idea to convert the side of the residence which faced the river into a green façade was born, to assimilate the building with the green fields that surround it on the remaining three sides. A heavy steel framed structure was erected with an independent structural system, strategically tied back to the existing structure. This intervention allowed the balconies to achieve a large depth, with provisions for numerous planter boxes to line the balconies, creating a private area for the users, visually and cognitively screened from the exterior by the lush green façade.
