Sculpture Studios
Siwan, Bihar

Working with stone and metal has very specific spatial requirements. For metal, the volume has to accommodate the very high temperature of the smelting furnace and the design has to account for rising hot-air. For carving stone, the environment has to be open and easy to access. For this purpose, the two sheds were designed as light, metal structures hugging the profile of the site. Materials were selected such that they do not succumb to abrasive use and simple detailing enabled only 3 steel sections to be used across the two buildings. The open plan and the specific condition of the common space help sculptors work with ease indoors and outdoors.
